Why Sicily & the Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands are a UNESCO-protected archipelago off the north coast of Sicily — seven volcanic islands that range from the geothermal sulfur baths of Vulcano to the active sunset eruptions of Stromboli. Our route runs from Capo d’Orlando Marina through Vulcano, Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli and Salina, anchorage by anchorage, with the chef cooking on board on the quieter nights.

Sicilian-Italian cuisine is its own thing — caponata, fresh-caught swordfish, capers from Salina, Malvasia wine from Lipari. The Aeolians are smaller, wilder and quieter than the better-known Mediterranean spots. Most days you’ll anchor with one or two other boats in the bay, not twenty.

Local Knowledge

From the Captain’s Seat

Anchored a mile off Stromboli at sunset, watching the lava run down to the sea — that’s the moment guests stop talking. The Aeolians don’t behave like other islands. By Day 4 you’ve lost track of what day it is.

The Journey

A Week at Sea

Each week adapts to your group, the wind, and what feels right. Here’s the rhythm we tend to follow.

Welcome aboard at Capo d'Orlando Marina
Day 1

Embark · Capo d’Orlando

You land in Palermo and we’ll meet you at Capo d’Orlando Marina. Welcome aboard, into your cabin, a glass of something cold on deck. The chef opens with a welcome dinner at anchor — Sicilian-Italian cooking, fresh fish, ingredients from a working kitchen on the coast.

Day 2

Vulcano · sulfur baths

Short sail east to Vulcano — the southernmost Aeolian. Morning at the geothermal sulfur baths, an easy hike to the (dormant) crater rim if you want one. Anchor for the night in the bay, dinner on board.

Day 3

Lipari · marina town

Lipari is the largest of the Aeolians — a beautiful marina town, a working fishing harbour, a shopping street that climbs up to the citadel. Wine tasting ashore at a Malvasia producer. Dinner in town.

Day 4

Panarea · pizza ashore

Panarea is the smallest inhabited Aeolian — pastel houses, narrow lanes, no cars. We anchor outside the harbour, tender in for a long lunch and a wander, swim in the bay in the afternoon.

Day 5

Stromboli · sunset volcano

Sail north to Stromboli — one of the most consistently active volcanoes in Europe. At sunset, we anchor offshore to watch eruptions safely from the boat. If conditions allow, the 3-hour hike up the cone for a closer view. The chef cooks on board — restaurants on the island are limited and we want to be at anchor when it gets dark.

Salina · vineyards

Salina is the green one — twin volcanic peaks, capers, vineyards, an artsy little harbour. Walk through the village, lunch ashore, an afternoon at a Malvasia vineyard if you want one.

Day 7

Lipari · last swim

We work back through the islands — a swim wherever the water’s best, a final lunch at anchor. Farewell dinner on board, the chef pulling out the last of the good wine.

A Few Things to Know

How much does a private catamaran charter in Sicily and the Aeolian Islands cost?
A private crewed Lagoon 46 catamaran charter in Sicily and the Aeolian Islands with Sailing 2 Wellness starts from €19,000 per week for up to 8 guests — around €2,375 per person for a full group. The price includes a professional skipper, an onboard chef, daily breakfast and lunch, fuel, marina fees, and water toys. Larger boats: Bali 5.4 from €30,000 and Bali 5.8 from €35,000 for groups up to 12.
Can we customize the route?
Yes — every private charter is fully flexible. The 7-day route from Capo d'Orlando Marina through Vulcano, Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli and Salina is the spine — but we adapt every week to your group, the wind, and what feels right. Vincent plans the itinerary with you in advance and adjusts on the day.
How many guests fit on each boat?
The Lagoon 46 sleeps up to 8 in 4 ensuite double cabins. The Bali 5.4 sleeps up to 12 in 6 cabins (4 doubles + a twin + a bunk). The Bali 5.8 sleeps up to 12 in 6 cabins (5 doubles + 1 twin). All cabins have private bathrooms.
What meals are included?
Daily breakfast and lunch are prepared on board by our chef using fresh local ingredients. One or two dinners are cooked at anchor — Stromboli has limited restaurants, so the chef cooks for the volcano-night anchorage. Most evenings you dine ashore at family-run restaurants in Lipari, Panarea and Salina. Dinners ashore (~€65 pp) and additional on-board dinners (~€75 pp) are not included.
What's the best time to sail Sicily and the Aeolian Islands?
June and September are our favourites — warm sea, calmer winds, fewer boats. July is peak season with the warmest weather and busiest anchorages. August has the warmest water of the year. The full Aeolian season runs June through September.
How do payments work?
A 50% deposit secures your booking — we send a digital agreement and an invoice for direct bank transfer (preferred) or card. The balance is due 12 weeks before departure. For bookings more than 12 months in advance, we accept a 25% deposit now, a second 25% at the 12-month mark, and the balance at 12 weeks out. Wire transfers in EUR; cards available with a small processing fee.
Will I see active volcanoes?
Stromboli is one of the most consistently active volcanoes in Europe — at sunset, we anchor offshore so you can watch eruptions safely from the boat, or hike up the cone for a closer view. Vulcano has geothermal sulfur baths but the crater itself is not currently erupting.
